Chicago is a year-round destination with pros and cons for each season. If you are into budget-friendly tours, we recommend traveling in the Fall. That’s when the crowds are minimal, and flight bookings and hotel reservations are less expensive. In addition, Summer has many free activities such as beaches, concerts, and festivals, but the cost of accommodations may be a bit pricey.

Where to Stay in Chicago?

When it comes to budget-friendly accommodation, we recommend checking out HI Chicago, The J. Ira and Nicki Harris Family Hostel! 

Why? Here are some pros and cons based on experience:

Pros:

1. This hostel gives you a prime location in Downtown Chicago without the prime cost. 
2. Great amenities such as a game room, free Wi-Fi, and free breakfast onsite café, and friendly 24/7 staff.
3. Events hosted daily by the hostel, from city tours to breweries. These are great opportunities to meet new travelers, learn history, and explore the city.  

Cons:

1. Although the location is generally safe, you may witness homelessness in the area. Keep your situational awareness and enjoy the city. 
2. Bring slippers and toiletries as washrooms are shared. There is a CVS located across the street.

Let’s now hop onto the best things to do in Chicago when traveling on a budget! I have listed some free or cheap activities for your convenience.

Cloud Gate

Located on Randolph Street, Cloud Gate is one of the most iconic tourist attractions in Chicago. It’s basically British artist Anish Kapoor’s first public outdoor work installed in the U.S. The shiny 110-ton weighing elliptical bean-like sculpture reflects Chicago’s skyline and clouds in its seamlessly polished stainless-steel plates. It’s set at the entrance of the park. The best part? There isn’t any entrance fee, and the site is open from 6:00 AM – 11:00 PM. 

River Museum

The Bridgehouse Museum is often named the River Museum, as it offers close-up views of the River and the DuSable Bridge in motion. You can either enjoy views of the massive gear from the gear room or climb to the top of the tower to witness the charm of the bridge lift from above. The museum has a self-guided admission system based on “Pay What You Can.” However, the suggested donations include $8 for general admission, $6 for adults over 62, students, and children between 6 to 12 years.

Lincoln Park Zoo

Whether you are a lover of animals or just want to have fun with your kids, Lincoln Park Zoo will be your best bet. Here, you get to explore 200 unique species of animals from around the world.That’s not all; the 850+ plant species dotting the 49-acre stretch of the zoo will surely leave you drooling over. This lush, flowery verdure sets a perfect home for frogs, turtles, insects, and more. This zoo is free all year round. 

River Walk

Though entry is free for everyone, donations are suggested. So, give whatever you can.
